Lidar is not just for autonomous cars

Everybody thinks that Lidar is only applicable for cars. Esri UK, a mapping and spatial analytics company, created maps of rivers around the world from detailed elevation data collected using remote sensing techniques. The information was taken from Esri’s Living Atlas, one of the world’s largest collections of geographic information.

Airborne Lidar for high-precision maps

Lidar (Light Detection And Radar) is a photonics technology based on laser. Mounted on an aircraft Lidar technology is able to create maps of extremely high detail. The Lidar sensor sends invisible near-infrared light pulses to the ground. The distance is then calculated by recording the time the light pulse takes to travel from the sensor to the ground and back. Continue reading “Airborne Lidar for high-precision maps”
